Skirts these days are really reminding me of the mini-skirts I loved in high school, a tight, one layer cotton/lycra mix anywhere from super mini to knee length. Back then I wore them with t-shirts and chuck taylors (hi-tops and lo). I'm dating myself, that's a totally early to mid 90's style and I rocked it proudly back then. Now those skirts are back, but with new details like zippers and pleating.
Or the basic tight skirt in a cool modern color -

My New Red Skirt
On a whim the other day I walked into Anthropologie and actually bought something. I spend so much time looking at clothes online I rarely actually shop for myself in a store these days, but they had this red brocade skirt marked down so many times it was too good a deal to pass up -

I can't find a better picture online, it's slightly high waisted with a bubble shape and pockets. On me it isn't so much a mini skirt, but it looks great with a pair of high heels, I'm thinking my nude patent pumps, or a funky new sky-high heeled sandals like the Jcrew ones I posted last week.
These are a cute less expensive version -

perfect for our trip to Florida!

3.1 Phillip Lim for Spring 2010 - great dresses
Phillip Lim is a fashion media darling, Hollywood starlets love him but to be honest, I never really thought many of his clothes seemed wearable by real people. Until now.
I just went through his show from last week during New York Fashion Week and holy crap. I loved pretty much every single look and I think these are really wearable by real women.
The first two looks are great pieces for every day life, the cropped trench in the first photo and the amazing mustard or gold skirt in the second-

I can't quite tell is the outfit below has a skirt or shorts, but whatever they are, I LOVE this. The top is so interesting with different textures and colors, and the waist is nipped in as in all of the following looks (which makes things much more wearable, versus the sacks or complicated things that only look good on models)

The look below would be work appropriate with cardigan or jacket, and it looks like a great party look without it.

This may sound crazy but the dress directly above reminds of the urim v'tumim, the jeweled breast plate the high priest would wear in the Temple as described in the bible. That is cool for a geeky historian such as myself :) Plus I love the different textures and colors, as well as the shape of the dress. It's really fantastic.

I love all of those dresses above and I would seriously love to wear them all. phew. Spring may be very expensive for me! It looks like alot of trends will continue, metallics, cinched waists, pencil skirts and full skirts, 80's era jackets with strong shoulders. Nice. To see all of the photos click here for style.com.

Cute Little Skirts...
I went into French Connection on a whim last week and found, to my surprise, the perfect miniskirt. I LOVE it, and it's on sale, but they don't have my size anymore. Sad, but in case they do have your size, you have to check this out -

I love the high waist and tulip shape, and even though it's white, it's not hard to wear somehow.
I will have to be satisfied with this adorable black skirt -

How cute is that? I like the a-line shape and fun detail at the sides, and this one can be worn all year long. Awesome.

Designer Skirts For a Song...
Spring Promotions - Up to Extra 30% Off on YOOX.COM!
This Spring sale at Yoox inspired me to check out what they have these days, and I am finding myself returning over and over to this DVF skirt -

It is fantastic. I can't get over the fabric, I just love it. And the cut is also great, the A-line is universally flattering. I absolutely adore this skirt and wish I had an excuse to buy it. Since I can't come up with one, a reader has got to give this skirt a good home and lots of exercise.
This Moschino Cheap and Chic skirt is also fantastic, and such a good deal with this sale -

I love the color and shape. This would fit right into a work wardrobe as well as fun going out clothes.
I am completely intrigued by this skirt -

I love the asymmetry, the zippers and the fold at the top. I think all of that will make it a very flattering, not to mention eye catching piece.
There are so many more where these came from...

Spring Skirt Perfection
In middle school I loved Esprit clothes, but they seemed to fall off the map for a while. Then when I lived in New York an Esprit store opened downtown, I couldn't believe it. And now I am into a few things on their website which has a good deal -
Online Special - Save 10% on ESPRIT

I love this skirt -
I love the shape - the A-line is such a flattering cut for pretty much everyone (I live in A-line skirts all summer!), and I love the pattern and the flowy fabric as well. In addition to this one, it comes in another (more blue) color scheme. It's also on sale and even better with the 10% off from above!

Michelle Obama's Lovely Green Skirt

Not suprisingly here has been all kinds of hype about what Michelle Obama is wearing in England. I was kind of surprised though that she wore this gorgeous J.Crew mint green skirt - it's really a beautiful skirt, I love the fabric. I thought it fit a little funny, but it looks great on Michelle (much better than on the model below from the website, she looks like she has a belly)!
The Chicago Tribune had a nice article today about her outfit choices for hanging out with the queen. Check it out here.

Recreate Runway Looks
I have been looking around for a good top that I can tuck into high waisted skirts, or wear with jeans and it's harder than I imagined it would be. I have something pretty specific in mind (as usual) which makes it harder to find (as usual...) and this top looks like it hits the mark, the only problem is they no longer have my size, but they might have yours so click to take a look -

And this skirt - I love it to recreate a lot of the looks from the runway, at a fraction of the price. The tulip style can be a little scary at first, I mean what woman wants to add heft to the hips, and as I've said many times before - just because it's trendy doesn't mean it's for you, but it's worth giving this style a try, it is really cute.

Abaete Sample Sale
Gilt has an Abeate sample sale going on today and tomorrow, and there are a surprising number of pieces left, including these fantastic skirts:
I love the seams and A-line shape of the first skirt, and the high-waisted slim shape of the second (great seaming detail on that one as well) There are great relatively inexpensive ways to recreate the looks I've been highlighting from the New York and Paris runways.
For an invitation to Gilt click here.
