an outfit inspired by 27 Dresses...

I have introduced my husband to the romantic comedy, and so have been enjoying more of them lately. I watched 27 Dresses for the umpteenth time and although some of Katherine Heigl's outfits are boring, there are a few I still love - they have stood the test of time, ok just a couple of years but still...





I know, I know, you can't see all of her outfit and Malin Ackermen is stealing some of the spotlight in the first shot, and the second is an awkward view. Sorry, but you get the idea, right?

So, I love that outfit, the straight black pants, cream top and black vest or short sleeved cardigans. I've been looking around for that top layer and found a couple of really interesting options.

This first one is very different from other tops, I like the drapey sleeves and low v neck, as well as the way it closes just in the middle. That will create curves on those of us who may need a little help, and accentuated a waist in anyone who doesn't need the help. It will also broaden narrow shoulders. It's really a flattering shape.

This second one is cute, it's alittle more mainstream than the one above but can still create a similar outfit -

It also closes just in the center creating curves, and the drapey v-neck is flattering. The smaller shoulders are better for anyone who has very broad shoulders (vs. the first one above, that will probably accentuate shoulders)

You can just throw either of these on over many pieces already in your wardrobe, making it very useful.

(500) Days of Summer and what we can learn about dressing...

I saw this movie the other night, it was fantastic. Joseph Gordon- Levitt is so adorable (particularly when singing This Charming Man, a song not played enough these days if you ask me), as is Zooey Deschanel. I love these Deschanel sisters. As it turns out, the friend I saw the movie with is as obsessed with the show Bones as I am. It drives Greg crazy but Bones seems to have replaced Law and Order as my "I can watch it all day everyday no matter how many times I've seen this episode" show. And there was a crossover actor, the woman who plays the lawyer on the show was in this movie.

Oops, I digress, back to (500) Days of Summer. Everyone has been raving about Summer's clothes in the film, but I have to say I didn't love them. I liked her quirky accesories and she looks gorgeous as always, but her clothes were not always flattering.

I did like this outfit -

The a-line skirt in the photo above is fantastic on her frame. They also go to a wedding and her dress in that scene is amazing -

You can see the top of it above, the color is perfect, the criss cross and v-neck are incredibly flattering, and that leads to a knee-length full skirt, perfection!

The problem arises when she wear pants, they are high waisted with weird details and some seem too short. While it gives the quirky thrift store-vibe which I suppose is what they were going for, it's not good on her pear shaped frame. It doesnt matter that she is tiny and gorgeous, we all still have specific figures that need to be taken into acount...

I would put a pear shaped woman in pants like these:

They are great with their wide legs, below is a more affordable version -

I have a feeling this movie will hold up to several viewings. My last favorite indie romantic movie didn't really hold up to a few viewings - I thought Garden State was so great the first time I saw it, but after watching it a couple of times found the relationship unbelievable and it even got annoying. As I said, this charming man makes it very very watchable...

Clothes Off Their Backs

I just saw 27 Dresses. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie, it was really cute - and I'm obsessing over some of the outfits in it (not the bridesmaids dresses, ick) I looked at the movie website and it has a link to another site called Premiere Props, where we can buy the actual outfit worn by the actors in the movie. I wouldn't actually buy the outfits - they are ridiculously overpriced, I guess they want us to pay for the fact that the clothes were on James Marsden's and Katherine Heigl's backs but I like it because I can see what brand each of the pieces are, and try to find them myself on say, ebay. Something like this outfit:

On Premiere Props we could purchase the outfit, probably in a wee little size (it doesn't say but the actress looks tiny) for a paltry $1499.99, I might go looking for the awesome Philip Lim top elsewhere though.

But this Temperley dress:
it's gorgeous, and on Premiere Props it's priced at $899, which is probably significantly less than it would cost new. That might be a great deal if you are the right size.
