My Oscar Favorites

As usual, there were some fashion winners and losers. I'm choosing to focus on the winners!

First up - Queen Latifah, who looked absolutely gorgeous. This is not the best angle but still, the dress was perfect, her hair, makeup and accessories were also perfection.

Gabourey Sidibey (I hope I spelled that right), she loved her Marchesa gown and so did I!

Elizabeth Banks, I loved the whole look. I could do without some of those fluffly layers at the bottom, but overall her dress, hair, makeup and accessories created such a stunning look it didn't matter so much.

Anna Kendrick - I would not have chosen the color, but I did love the gown. It's ethereal.

Of all the women in red, Sigourney Weaver is my favorite. How is that this woman doesn't age? It's really amazing, and that dress is perfect for her.

Colorful Dresses Rule at the SAG Awards...

I have always been afraid to wear green, but I Think thanks to Lea Michele (of Glee), I may have to change my tune -

It's a Catherine Malandrino dress, and I love the color as well as the cut.

This photo I think proves Diane Kruger would look amazing in a brown paper bag -

The dress is a gorgeous shape, but the color? like a paper bag I'd have to say. And she still looks absolutely amazing.

And Christina Hendricks looks amazing in her gorgeous red dress, yet again proving that redheads CAN wear red -

Golden Globes Best Dress

Somehow I totally forgot about the Golden Globes last night, so I had to catch up on the photos but so far my favorite dress is surprising -

Maggie Gyllanhall's Roland Mouret dress! It doesn't look like much from the side, but the art deco style detailing down the front is AMAZING. I love this dress.

the fun stuff (Leighton Meester, Alexis Bledel)

My mother just told me that I put all the fun stuff on the Shopping Made Simple Facebook fan page, and that I really ought to share it here too. I suppose she is right - but can't everyone just become a facebook fan? jeez.

Anyway, something I liked yesterday -

Leighton Meester is just so cute here at the Teen Choice Awards. I love the dress, the shoes, the accessories, all of it.

Alexis Bledel also looked amazing (as usual, I love Rory, what can I say?) -

She tends to wear cutting edge ensembles, which she explains in this interview as a way to make people understand she actually isn't Rory Gilmore. I suppose that means I should stop calling her Rory. There was a picture of her with the guy who plays Matt Saracen on Friday Night Lights and I got all excited that maybe my favorite characters were dating in real life (he also has a real name I suppose I should share, Zach Gilford). Sadly, they just have a movie coming out this month, guess I will have to see that one -Post Grad.

The Wedding Dress in the Hangover

We saw the Hangover last night, I can't believe how funny it is! I mean really really funny. Of course something I noticed was the clothes and the bride at the end was wearing a wedding dress (duh, tends to happen at a wedding...). I thought at first it was a Vera Wang my sister tried on in her wedding gown search, but silly me, turns out to be something I tried on - an Amsale gown which is the same brand I wore. This one is also a strapless, but with a sweetheart neckling and an A-line skirt, along with a sash.

The pictures I snagged are not so great, sorry...

So while I the role of the bride was very minimal, the dress certainly stood out.

WTF?

This Balmain Crystal embellished jacket has been all over the magazines over the past few months, Beyonce was spotted wearing it. The thing cost over $11,000 full price, and recently went on sale at Net-A-Porter for $7,000. I just can't believe that anyone would really pay that much for a jacket, let alone something monstrous like this. I mean look at it, the only thing it makes me think of is Michael Jackson, and not in a good way. Maybe that's what they meant to do.

I guess if you have as much money as Beyonce must, this sort of expenditure seems normal or reasonable. I don't care how much it costs, it's still not pretty.

Eva Longoria Parker in Karen Millen

I recognized a dress Eva Longoria Parker was wearing recently, but could not remember where I'd seen it, and then I saw a picture of her today in yet another dress I recognized and realized it - they are both from the British line Karen Millen, and under $300. I love her clothes, I have 2 skirts myself and they are my favorites, these dresses are also fantastic!

After seeing the picture above I googled her and Karen Millen, and it seems she wears Karen Millen clothes all the time. Jeez, guess I should pay more attention to these things...

Pink Dresses for Spring...

I watch the show Priveleged. Yes I do. And I like it. A lot. But not as much I like this dress from this weeks show -And from another angle -

I LOVE this dress. It's insane. I love the pleating and draping, the color, everything about it.

I found something remotely like it at Forever 21 of all places -

I won't be running to Forever 21 to buy it though, dresses there just never look right on me, which i suppose makes sense since it is meant for girls half my age.

I did find this Nanette Lepore dress at Revolve -

Nanette Lepore Sunny Day Dress in Punch

It's not quite the same, but for women who don't want to go strapless it's great, with the empire waist that is so flattering on everyone and the lovely pleating detail that I am such a sucker for. I like it. It's perfect for all those Spring weddings coming up...

Phillip Lim Fall Runway Show

I could not keep up with fashion week, but I"m still going through it all and I am so surprised at how much I like what Phillip Lim showed. I know, everyone in the fashion world loves him it seems, but it doesn't always translate into clothes that real women can wear - it's all for boyish stick thin figures. But something is different this season and I can really see women with all kinds of body types wearing these pieces. Also, it's interesting that it seems alot of trends from previous seasons are still going strong with many different silhouettes remaining current - short dresses, wide trousers, skinny pants, cropped jackets, it makes for a great mix. Take a look at my favorites:

I love the v-neckline and the gathers on the side - this would look AMAZING on an hourglass figure, which is nothing I would have said about any Phillip Lim designs I've seen before.
This next dress as well:

I love this dress. It has a subtle pattern on the fabric, and this would create amazing curves on a boyish figure as well as look amazing on other women.

Then we have the jackets - I thought there were so many fantastic jackets in the show I can't possibly put them all in this post, but some favorites -

I love the cropped jacket over cropped skinny pants, of course this doesn't work on all figures.

This coat is incredible:

I'm really into this cream on cream look -

I love all the ruffles and layers on top, I probably wouldn't even have noticed it except that In one of Isla Fisher's press stops for her movie (shopaholic) she wore a top and jacket combo like this and I could not stop looking at it, it was so beautiful:

Best Oscars Dresses

I was really impressed by many of the dresses worn to the Oscars this year. In fact, I was impressed by the show (I did fast forward through a lot of it) but Hugh Jackman was awesome! I saw him in 'A Boy From Oz' on Broadway and he just doesn't disappoint. I didn't watch the Barbara Walters interviews after the show, but I saw a clip today of his lap dance he did for her. whoa.

And back to the dresses - I'm going to focus on the good rather than the bad here:

Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson, they look AMAZING. I couldn't find a good picture of Viola alone so I put them up together - Taraji is so freakin' adorable and I love both of their dresses.

Angelina Jolie - a lot of people think she looked boring but I like it. It's tasteful and flattering and unfussy, as the mother of 6 kids I can't imagine a better choice. Plus those earrings...

Another black column dress I liked (surprisingly) -

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised since it is a similar silhouette to my wedding dress.

Here we have some lovely blue dresses:

And cream dresses -

Evan Rachel Wood's dress is gorgeous, I love the detail on the bodice and the flowy skirt. It's beautiful, but I hate her makeup and hair, she looks so severe - it's like she is desperate to be an older woman.

Penelope Cruz wore a gorgeous vintage gown -

I also really liked Anne Hathaway's dress, she looked beautiful. I wonder though how the dress fit her because from some angles it looked like the bodice stuck out a little, like it was armor that couldn't quite be molded to fit. Anyway, it was gorgeous.

And Natalie Portman. Let's face it, she would look amazing in a shapeless sack but this gown is great - it's sophisticated but youthful at the same time. Perfect for a young woman who should look like a young woman.

Last but certainly not least, Meryl Streep. She sometime looks kind of crazy at awards events, but this dress is beautiful.

Award Season Fashion

I didn't post much about the award show fashion of the past few weeks, somehow it just got past me, except for a couple of dresses that I keep going back to -

This is amazing, the shape, the color, everything. I guess I'm a little biased, my wedding dress was sort of like a white, strapless version of this, fitted to the mid-thigh with a trumpet skirt, it's just such a flattering style. But what is also really special about this one is the top - the v-neck and strap detail over the shoulders. I love it.

And Christina Hendricks always look amazing -
I love how the dress shows off her hourglass figure, and it's perfectly proportioned as well. Many red-heads are afraid to wear red, this proves it's not scary! It looks fantastic.

Golden Globes WTF?

Haven't time yet to go through all the fabulous dresses, but the picture of Renee Zellweger cannot wait for comment - what the eff'ing lord was she (or her fired stylist) thinking?

Tina Fey (all the way on the right) looks amazing, as she always does these days. Laura Dern and Sally Hawkins (not sure that's right, never heard of her before last night...) look pretty good.

What the hell was Renee thinking? the top is totally sheer, and we know she is so skinny but she still manages to look like she has a belly. And the hair and makeup also - she kind of looks like she belongs on the set of murderous musical Johnny Depp was in last year. I'm totally blanking on the name right now.

style in the white house

politics aside, the white house will be getting one very fashionable first lady come January. She started off with a Narciso Rodriguez dress last night.

Click here for an article about the dress.

Unfortunately I'm completely preoccupied with wedding stuff these days (10 days to go - ack) I'm getting shots today for the honeymoon. One thing I do not want to come back with is Yellow Fever. Havaianas yes, yellow fever no. Let me know if you want a pair of the Havaianas!

Sock Hop at the Emmys

I may be beating a dead horse here, but I have 1 more Emmy's fashion post, I am totally digging this tea-length (or maybe it's ankle length?) strapless dress style that seems to have taken Hollywood by storm,

my favorites:

America Ferrera-

The hair, the makeup, she looks amazing and the dress is gorgeous.

Lisa Edelstein -

How cute is she???? And the dress, my lord I love it.

And Marcia Cross looks great as well -

These dresses are like sock-hop clothes after a major upgrade, I love it. But of course notice one thing these lovely ladies all have in common in these photos are sky-high heels, necessary so the skirt cutting off at the ankle doesn't make anyone look squat (not that it's even possible with these women)

So, how can we recreate this look? I'd say carefully. And maybe within the 'spirit' of it,

Like this cute black dress -

Just add great hair, makeup and fun accessories and you have your own version of America's Emmy outfit.

Or this gorgeous skirt -

I love the swish factor and appliqués, like Lisa's dress above.

Or this AMAZING option -

Christopher Deane Karolina Polka Dot Dress in Black/White

I love that dress, and even better, it's on sale - 50% off. Buy it, that dress deserves a good home.
